We talk a lot about preparing pupils for the future, but how many of our staff feel prepared for the changes happening right now?
The Priority Schools Can’t Afford to Ignore
We all talk about preparing pupils for the future. But how many of our staff feel equipped for the changes that are already happening right now?
Artificial Intelligence is not something coming over the hill. It is already influencing the way teachers plan lessons, mark work, communicate with parents and manage their workload. Pupils are using AI tools too, sometimes without fully understanding them, and certainly without consistent guidance.
Despite this shift, many schools still have no structured approach to AI training. Recent data from Teacher Tapp shows that most teachers are either unsure about how to use AI tools or have not had any form of training. Some are experimenting quietly on their own. Others are steering clear altogether.
This creates a real problem. When AI use is unregulated and uncoordinated, we risk data protection issues, safeguarding concerns, and widening gaps in confidence between staff. But even more importantly, we miss a real opportunity. Used well, AI can help reduce workload, support pupils with SEND, and enable more tailored approaches to teaching and learning.
AI will never replace teachers. It cannot build relationships, read the room, or make complex human judgements. But teachers who understand how to use it effectively will be better placed to lead in a fast-changing system.
It is time for schools and trusts to make AI part of their staff development strategy. This might mean offering an introductory session each term, linking AI use to existing improvement plans, and encouraging peer-to-peer learning so staff can explore tools safely.
This does not have to be expensive or complicated. But it does have to be intentional.
If we leave AI out of our CPD offer now, we risk falling behind. If we build it in, we give our staff the tools and confidence to make the most of what AI can offer, and we put ourselves in a stronger position to shape what comes next.
